Our Great Big Backyard Renovation

Is a huge process! We have been working so hard on our yard this year, and it isn't even close to where we want it to be. We have been taking out all kinds of trees, shrubs, and weeds, fixing sprinklers all over the place, etc.
Our biggest project so far was the giant Elm tree that was at the back of our property and blocking the sun where we want our vegetable garden. For those of you who have never experienced an Elm tree, they are awful because they shed teeny, tiny seeds in the spring that go everywhere and grow everywhere. They are junk trees.
To pay someone to take the tree out, it would have cost at least $1,500, so we decided to do it ourselves with my dad's expert help. What a huge undertaking! It was a big enough tree and close enough to houses that we couldn't just yell "timber" and drop it. We had to tie ropes to various parts of the tree and help it fall in places that were safe. Most of the time we had to take 1 branch at a time, making it a very long, laborious process.
On top of taking it out, we did it all the old fashioned way, with good old hand saws. No chain saws for us. That would be too easy! My dad would have made an awesome pioneer.

Yep. That is Andrew way up in that tree.

Calvin helped, too, and Joanna, Megan, Lexie and Natalie watched.
Our only casualty was one of my Dad's ladders. We misjudged how far the branch was going to fall from the give on the rope. We're just glad my dad was okay and able to hold on! LOL.
