1st Dentist Appointment

At Priya's 12 month appointment, Dr. Cline told us that he thought Priya had bottle rot (for those of you who don't know what bottle rot is, it is a decay of a baby's teeth that is caused by having formula or juice on your teeth too much. It usually happens from sleeping with a bottle). We didn't put Priya to sleep with a bottle all the time, but I admit it, on occasion we would put her to bed with one. I felt so bad! It is horrible when, as a parent, there is something you may have done to hurt your baby's well-being. Dr. Cline suggested we take her to the dentist to see what we could do.

So, off we went to Dr. Lever's office. He has been our dentist for years, and he is freaking awesome! If anyone needs a great dentist, he's your man!

And the dentist's verdict was... drumroll please...

The bad news is that the little spots on her teeth that the pediatrician saw are not just specks of leftover breakfast...
She is missing parts of her enamel on her front two teeth. Dr. Lever isn't sure if it is just genetic, and she was born with it, or if she maybe scraped it off in one of her many falls, but we just need to keep a close eye on it for a while.

Our Yard

Our yard continues to slowly improve (emphasis on the word SLOWLY). By the end of next summer, we are hoping that it will be where we want it. Here are some updates:

Andrew cleaning the vines off the cherry tree: They actually looked really pretty on it, but I am sure the tree is glad to finally be able to breathe.

Tada! Our one pear from our pear tree. If there are any expert gardeners our there that have any ideas as to why our apricot tree didn't produce this year, and why our pear tree produced only one pear, please leave us a comment and let us know!

The mountains from our backyard

We were really worried that with the late start, our garden wouldn't produce. It has been producing zucchini like weeds (which is no surprise for Utah), but we were really afraid the tomatoes weren't going to make it. We have finally started getting fresh tomatoes from the garden. Delish!

My favorite update so far: an herb garden! We have Rosemary, Parsley, Oregano, Sweet Basil, Chives, Mint, and Sage. We have enough room for a few more herbs, so if anyone knows of any "must haves," some advice would be great!

The Gateway

With Priya loving water so much, I don't get why we waited all summer to take her to the Gateway to play in their fountains. It was so much fun! She loved running through the water, and was much less afraid of getting wet than her mommy!

She was even trying to look down the holes where the water comes from. I think she was a mermaid in another life.

At the Park

One of our favorite things about Priya is how she really isn't afraid of many things, and the things she chooses to be afraid of are just bizarre (like stickers). She loves playing in the park, and she loves to go down the slide by herself. Sometimes it scares Mommy and Daddy a little bit when she is so gun-ho about things. She still hasn't realized that falling off the bed hurts, and I doubt she realizes that slides could potentially hurt, too. She is more of a risk taker than we would like.

We've decided that since we have been living in our new house for nearly a year, it is time to really start making it feel like a home. We have finally almost finished unpacking (just a few more boxes tucked away in the basement) and we finally started hanging pictures and setting up some decor. Hurray! We still need to finish painting, but who knows when that will happen! Here is a sneak peek of our "new" home:

Our Sweet Girl

Priya is now 1 year old. We took her to the doctor last week for her 12 month check-up. We waited until 13 months because she got sick with Foot, Hand, and Mouth the day before her 12 month check-up, so we took her in for a sick visit instead. What a horrible virus for little kids! Since she was sick, we waited a while to take her in for her check-up because we didn't want her getting her shots when her immune system was already compromised. I am sure getting sick was her way of trying to avoid her shots!

We were really surprised that she is actually taller than she is wide, because, quite honestly, she looks like a chubba (which we love!). I guess she just carries all her weight in her cheeks and thighs. She was all smiles and waves for Dr. Cline and his staff until they started poking and prodding her, and she was very offended when she was given her shots. She is extremely active, more so than most babies her age, and she is right on where she should be developmentally.

Learning to walk was a gradual thing for her, so we don't have an official day that she started walking, but she became competent at about 12 1/2 months. She still hasn't completely gotten her sea-legs yet, so sometimes she is still a little wobbly (for evidence, see the video below), but it is definitely her official mode of transportation now!

She is talking like crazy. She is starting to put 2 word phrases together (her first phrase was "ba ju," which, when translated, means "bottle juice," or a bottle with something in it besides formula). Some of her favorite words include shoe, tree, and "go go," which means "all gone." She also loves to walk around saying her name, which sounds like "ee-ya."

Some of Priya's favorite things to do right now include walking around the house with necklaces, bracelets, and a purse, playing outside, and trying to put shoes on everyone and everything. She loves playing with magnets, reading books, and carrying her puppy, "Patch," around. She loves going for walks, and loves waving at any car or person she sees. She likes to dance to music and loves eating bread.

Some of the things we love about our sweet girl:

1. We love how she feels like bugs, horses, and cows are similar enough to dogs that when she sees them, she should pant and bark accordingly.

2. We love how she thinks that hot wheel cars are going to get her somewhere, so she sits on them and tries to get them to go.

3. We love how she calls pine cones "balls."

4. We don't really love how she has become a very picky eater, and she decides whether or not she wants to try something by what it looks like, and something that she loves one day, she hates the next (but we do think it is cute).

5. We love (and are exasperated with) how she loves other children (and waves and goes over to play with them), but she is also possessive of her toys and personal space, and will hit and bite if she feels like she is being pushed around.

6. We love how she loves climbing on everything. She stands on the seat of her bike, and she is constantly climbing onto chairs, etc.

7. We love that she is finally starting to cuddle a little bit again, and we love how if you give her a hug, she will put her head on your shoulder and pat your back.

8. We love how she gets really shy and smiley around Grandpa (almost like she has a crush on him).

9. We love how, when we rock her, she wants all of her animals be rocked, too, so we end up rocking with Pooh Bear, Thumper, Patch, and her monkey, lamb, penguin, and monster. It ends up being pretty crowded on the rocking chair.

10. We love how she chooses weird things to be terrified of (like stickers and bubble gum bubbles), and yet, she isn't afraid of fireworks, loud noises, or strangers.

I do wish she would keep a hat or a bow on once in a while. As soon as she remembers they are on her head, they are goners.

Labor Day at the Cabin

Labor day weekend was a lot of fun for us! We had a BBQ with Andrew's family on Saturday, and on Sunday after church, we went up to the family cabin to sleep overnight. It was so fun to spend time with my Aunt Lisa and Uncle Jim and their family, my grandpa and grandma, and my family. We had pizza for dinner, played some board games, then had a rousing game of flashlight tag in the forest outside the cabin. My mom even played! My dad had to go home for the night, due to my parent's fire alarms deciding to malfunction.

The next day, we spent a couple of hours (which really ended being all day) painting the railing of the cabin and chopping down some dead trees for firewood. My grandma made a delicious Mexican food lunch. It was so great to spend time with family!
